Governor Hochul Urges New Yorkers to Prepare For Heavy Snow, Ice and Wind through Monday – ny.gov

State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Acting Commissioner Jackie Bray said, “New Yorkers should pay close attention to their local forecast over the next 24 hours and be prepared for hazardous travel conditions upstate on Monday. The Office of Emergency Management and our State agency partners will be fully engaged over the holiday to ensure we have appropriate resources to respond to this storm and we’re prepared to assist local governments, as necessary.”

Winter Weather warnings and advisories are currently in effect across the State through Monday night for multiple counties in the Western NY, Finger Lakes, Central NY, Southern Tier, North Country, Mohawk Valley, Capital District, and Mid-Hudson regions. Coastal Flood Warnings are in effect for New York City, Long Island, and southern Westchester County through Monday.

Agency Preparations  

Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services

The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Emergency Operations Center is activated and will closely monitor conditions, coordinate response operations, and remain in contact with localities throughout the duration of the event. State stockpiles are prepared to deploy assets to localities to support any storm-related needs, including pumps, chainsaws, sandbags, generators, cots, blankets, and bottled water.

Department of Transportation

The State Department of Transportation is prepared to respond to this snow and ice event with more than 3,400 supervisors and operators statewide.

To support snow and ice activities in critical areas, a total of 19 staff including 15 plow truck operators and 4 equipment operator instructors are being deployed. They are distributed as follows:

  • Mohawk Valley: Receiving 4 plow operators and 2 equipment operator instructors from Long Island 
  • Western NY: Receiving 7 plow operators and 2 equipment operator instructors from Long Island
  • Finger Lakes: Receiving 4 plow operators from Long Island

All Out of Region Resources will be in place Sunday afternoon before the onset of precipitation.  The need for additional resources will be re-evaluated as conditions warrant throughout the event.

All residency locations will remain staffed for 24/7 operation throughout the duration of the event and priority cleanup operations.  All available snow and ice equipment is ready to deploy.  Fleet mechanics in affected areas will be staffing all main residency locations 24/7to perform repairs and keep trucks on the road.  Statewide equipment numbers are as follows:

  • 1602 large plow trucks
  • 150 medium duty plows
  • 51 tow plows
  • 323 large loaders
  • 39 snow blowers
